Luke McDermott is a Sunshine Coast Orthopaedic Surgeon with a focus on hip and knee joint Replacement. He is also Fellowship Trained in Shoulder Surgery. Luke has Private Consulting Rooms at the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital.

Dr Luke McDermott – BSC MBBS (HONS) FRACS FAOA

Luke was born and bred in Bundaberg. He was the captain of his secondary school, was the Mayor’s medalist, and achieved an OP1.

Luke did science as his undergraduate medical degree at the University of Queensland, majoring in physiology and pharmacology. He continued his education at UQ, graduating from medical school (with honours) in 2001. Through his medical training he tutored biochemistry at the University. He achieved the Paul Bolton memorial bursary for excellence in the field of surgery.

After completing his intern year at the Princess Alexandra Hospital Luke began basic surgical training and has been doing orthopaedics exclusively since 2003. He began advanced surgical training in 2008, concentrating predominantly in the sub-speciality areas of hip and knee arthroplasty, shoulder surgery and spine surgery. Luke had an extensive exposure to trauma surgery and has performed several thousand joint replacement surgeries.

After gaining his consultant qualification in January of 2012, Luke worked as the Assistant Director of Orthopaedics at Cairns Base Hospital for 12 months. The first half of 2013 was spent in New Zealand, completing the Trans Tasman Upper Limb Fellowship. Here he underwent extensive training in the treatment of degenerative disease of the shoulder (rotator cuff and joint replacement) and shoulder sports injuries. The second six months of 2013 was spent in Newcastle, where Luke underwent further training in spinal surgery.

Since the beginning of 2013 Luke has been working privately out of his clinic at the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital. Luke maintains a public appointment at Sunshine Coast University Hospital and is actively involved in training orthopaedic registrars. He maintains his knowledge and skills through ongoing research and attendance of both national and international orthopaedic meetings.

Luke is committed to advancing orthopaedic care on the Sunshine Coast over the next several decades.
